Welcome to Map World
Overview                             NEXT

Have you ever noticed that on world maps Greenland seems to change a lot?  Its area, shape, direction and distances across and north-south never seem to be the same?  Why is that? Do you think Greenland is really changing and every time someone makes a map they have to draw it differently? I hope not !

(You can click on the thumb nail maps to see the full editions.)

No, Greenland seems to change because all flat maps must distort the surface of the earth.
But the distortions are usually not evenly spread across the map.
By the time you get as far north as Greenland the distortion is tremendous on the maps we commonly use.
