Notes for JOHN CRYE:

John Crye was born and raised on the Isle of Man where he made his living as a "clothier". He migrated to America with his wife and family around 1758 settling in Chester, Pennsylvania [just west of Philadelphia] where he lived as a "plantation owner" until after 1790 when he was identified in the census there. Shortly thereafter he apparently moved to Mecklenburg County, NC where most of his children were located and where he eventually died in 1794.

The Will of John Crye (1727-1794) is quoted below:

Probated July 1808 Court.

Being weak in body, I give my wife Catherine a third of the profit from my land together with the use of the dwelling house I live in, the barn and other outbuildings during her life. I give to my son David the house I now live in with its outbuildings, 200 acres on which the house stands out of a 400 acre tract, and an adjacent parcel of 50 acres out of the tract of 100 acres last taken by me. I give to my son John my old plantation of 182 acres, together with the other 50 acres out of the 100 acres mentioned above. I give my son James the other 200 acres out of the 400-acre tract. I give to my daughter Isabella a sorrel mare, two cows, two feather beds and bedclothes and her saddle. I give to my daughter Sarah, wife of Andrew Walker, and to my daughter Catherine, wife of Joshua Gordon, each a cow. I give to my son William and my daughter Margaret, wife of Thomas Walker, each a Spanish milled dollar. All the balance of my personal estate is for the use of my wife.

William Crye (b. 1752) came to America from Isle of Man as a child (c1760) and was reared in Chester, Pennsylvania. He later moved to North Carolina and was volunteered for military service during the Revolutionary War under Captain Hagins (his future father-in-law) in Mecklenburg Co., N.C. In his own words, he "was born on the Isle of Man, raised in Chester County, Pennsylvania, moved thence to Mecklenburg North Carolina, thence to Burke in the same state, thence Granville District of South Carolina, thence to Burke again, thence to Hale County Georgia, thence to where he now resides" (McMinn County, TN).

He volunteered again under Capt John Drummond in Greenville, S.C. and served under Col. Thomas Neel/Noel and Col. Ezekial Polk with whom he fought Indians. He was stationed at Prince's Fort and Wofford's Fort and then served in the horse cavalry under Capt. John Foster, Col. Henry Hampton and General Sumter, during which period he was engaged in searching for Tories. John and Edith Crye moved with their family from Madison County, Indiana where they had resided since 1836 and came to Dunn County (west of Chippewa Falls) Wisconsin in 1862, locating in its wildest portion -- their nearest neighbor being 3 miles away, while the nearest school was at Menomonie, 14 miles distant. In this isolated locality the family lived for several years. (From a Biography of their son, Zachariah Crye).

Notes for CALEB BOWMAN:

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿCALEB BOWMAN

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ(Grandson of Edward. An Autobiography.)

The Bowmans emigrated to North Carolina long before the revolution. My Grandfather Bowman settled in Virginia, near Richmond, then moved to North Carolna, Burke county. The first farm that he cleared was worn out and thrown out to the commons before I can recollect. He had a large apple orchard on his second farm, which was still bearing when I left there 9/1831, but grown up in pine and brush. He then moved about half a mile. He had another farm in the river bottom.

I do no know whether my uncles were born in Virginia or North Carolina. My grandfather had four boys. Uncle Marshall lived in Virginia. Uncle Sherwood lived in North Carolina. They had two boys and one girl, Marshall, Sherwood and Anna. I don't know the name of the lady whom Sherwood married. Groves Bowman, my uncle, married Polly Conelly, in Burke county, North Carolina. He was a farmer, Justice of the Peace and Probate Judge. He had seven boys and three girls, all born in Burke county. Groves' oldest boy was John. He was a tanner by trade. I do not know how many children he had. George was a Methodist preacher. Jimmie married Betsy Bellew, and they had children, but I do not know how many. He was a farmer and also a constable while he lived. William married Sallie Bellew. Harvey married Jimmie's widow, and moved to Missouri. William was class leader in the Methodist Church, and also moved to Missouri. Leander and Caleb had not reached manhood when I left North Carolina. Elvira, I understood, married and moved to Missouri after I left home. Anna married Eli Sids [Seitz?]. They belonged to the Methodist Church. Susan was still young when I left North Carolina [1831].

I had another cousin there named Lanson Bowman, but cannot give the name of his parents. Aunt Prudence, I never saw. Aunt Betsy lived with Father [Shepherd] till her marriage, which was to a man named Vance. They moved to So. Carolina, and I have not since heard from them.

My father, Shepherd Bowman, married Betsy Spencer, whose parents were Irish. [On this point, see Joshua Bowman's statement.] Grandfather Spencer was a Methodist preacher and my father and mother belonged to the Methodist Church. Father was a farmer and owned over 1100 acres of land -- if my memory serves me rightly.

There were ten children in my father's family, five boys and five girls. My oldest brother, Neddie, died [in North Carolina, at 14 years of age]. Fannie, Spicey, Betsy and Anna all died in North Carolina.

I was born in North Carolina, July 19, 1807. Lived with my father till I was in my twenty-fourth year, when I went to Indiana. I was married to Elizabeth Crye, March 18, 1832, in Bartholomew County, Indiana. I then started out to visit my father in Missouri; worked at the Salt Works on Mud river; hired to a man to go to New Orleans on the boat; and on my return I contracted the measles. I landed at Cairo Illinois, and though very sick, walked all the way to Father's. Uncle Tom Spencer was called and pronounced me in danger. I was placed over a kettle of boiling water and spicewood, and then put to bed. It was March before I was able to be around. As soon as able, I left for Illinois and subsequently lived for varying periods as follows: In Champaign and Tazewell Counties, Ill., Howard and Tippecanoe Counties, Indiana; thence to Richland County, Wis. Moved thence in August, 1855, to Iowa. The June following, returned to Wisconsin. Back to Indiana in 1859, and, returning to Wisconsin in 1861, I have since lived alternately in the counties of Eau Claire and Richland. Am now, March, 1887, in Richland. . . .

During my residence of something over eleven years in Illinois, I was a member of the Methodist Church. Upon going to Indiana, I joined the Christian Church, and since then have been an elder in that church. As for other positions, I have been a member of the Town Board and Chaplain of the Grange Lodge.

My brothers, Joshua, William and John, and sister, Celia, were all born in North Carolina, Burke county. Celia married Drury Wills. . . .

Now to my own children: Spicey Ann, born in Indiana, April 21, 1833; Joseph S., born in Champaign Co., Ill.; John and Jonathan will furnish you the required information in their own cases.

Caleb Bowman filed a land grant affadavit/application on 5 Oct 1868 and proved 19 Mar 1874. This was for 80 A in Union Twp, Vernon Co. and stated he was the head of a family consisting of himself and wife - no children mentioned. He "...built a house thereon 16 x 18 ft one story high log house one floor, one door, one window, covered with shingles, also an addition thereto of same materials 10 (I think) x 10, one floor, one door and two windows...plowed, fenced and cultivated about 16 acres of said land...built a barn of logs 16 ft by 18 covered with shingles, one door, one window, and the reason we not (sic) appear at the said office in person is on account of the great distance being more than 60 miles" (to the LaCrosse land office).

14. JONATHAN M.8 CRYE (JOSEPH7, WILLIAM6, JOHN5, JOHN4, WILLIAM3, JOHN2, HENRIE1) was born 1829 in Bartholomew Co., Indiana, and died Aft. 1900 in Vernon Co., Wisconsin. He married (1) EUNICE LYTLE January 03, 1856 in Grant County, Indiana. He married (2) ELIZABETH ANN TOWNSEND16 May 21, 1879 in Vernon Co., Wisconsin17, daughter of BARRY TOWNSEND and VIOLETTE UNKNOWN.

Notes for JONATHAN M. CRYE:

Jonathon Crye was born and raised in Indiana where he married his first wife, Eunice Lytle. He appears at age 29 in the 1860 census of Wayne County, Indiana as a head of household including wife Eunice (22), and children: Joseph (4), Elizabeth (2) and Peter (1). At some point around 1865 he migrated with his family to Wisconsin.

Jonathan's initial land grant application for a homestead in Eau Claire County, Wisconsin was dated 2 Dec 1868 and in it he stated he was a married man over 21 years of age. On the final proof, dated 1 Dec 1875, he lists himself as a single man. The property claimed was 80 A in Fairchild Twp, Eau Claire Co, final certificate dated 10 Feb 1876. Other information included in his affadavit includes "...has built a house thereon 14 x 18 Ft, 1 1/2 stories high, with shingle roof and board floor, having 1 door and 2 windows and the same is a good comfortable house to live in and has lived in the said house and in a smaller one previously built on said land...and that he has, since said settlement, plowed, fenced and cultivated about 4 acres of said land...and cleared for meadow 3 acres, dug a well 16 feet deep and set out 54 apple trees."

Two years later in 1877 Jonathan M. Crye appears on the property tax roll of Union Township, Vernon County, Wisconsin as the owner of 40 acres. According to records and recollection of Irene Morgan, Jonathan M. Crye was the brother of Cinthay (Crye) Smith and uncle of her son William Smith. William Smith, his wife Elizabeth Townsend and their children were reportedly living with Jonathan Crye (a bachelor then) in his cabin in Vernon County when William Smith died c1878. Shortly thereafter Elizabeth remarried Jonathan gaining a father for her children and providing him a housekeeper in his later years. Both Jonathan (age 71) and Elizabeth (age 61) are listed in the 1900 Federal Census of Vernon County, Wisconsin.

One family story is that Jonathan M. Crye's first wife died and that her parents agreed to take his children and raise them on the condition that Jonathan would agree to relinquish all claim to custody of them. That would probably have been before he went to Vernon Co. Thus far no record had been found ot those children.

Notes for ELIZABETH ANN TOWNSEND:

Elizabeth (age 61) is listed in the 1900 Federal Census of Vernon County, Wisconsin.

As a little girl in Indiana, she got some of the fingers cut off her right hand by one of her brothers.

She was a midwife and according to Paul Sigler's aunt (now deceased at 92) she said she could remember that whenever there was a Bailey or Sigler being born, she would travel there to "assist". She also said that Elizabeth always wore the white nurses' dresses.

After John Q. Bailey ran off with a young woman, it is said that she would take catnaps and "talk to John". She may have known where he was but would not tell because his brother James had threatened to shoot him, as it was his daughter that John ran off with.

Notes for JOHN QUINCY BAILEY:

Final homestead claim certificate dated 30 Dec 1876, for 80 Acres in Knapp Station, Stanton Twp, Dunn Co. states that John Bailey "...built a house of logs 16 x 18 ft., one and a half stores high, shake roof, board floor, with 1 door and 1 window...has set out 23 apple and some plum trees and gooseberry bushes".

John Q. Bailey, a pioneer of Dunn Co., is reported to have prepared a very acceptable history of that County with the able assistance of Mr. Zachariah Crye, his brother-in-law. In his notes, Paul Sigler reports that John Q. Bailey ran off with his brother James's daughter around 1887/88.

Notes for ZACHARIAH CRYE:

Commemorative and Biographical Record

Zachariah R. Crye, a pioneer of Wisconsin and well known "cruiser" of former days, who now resides 2 miles from Ladysmith in Rusk County, Wisconsin was the son of John and Edie Crye. The parents of Mr.Crye came to Dunn County (west of Chippewa Falls) Wisconsin in 1862, locating in its wildest portion, their nearest neighbor being 3 miles away, while the nearest school was at Menomonie, 14 miles distant. In this isolated locality the family lived for several years. This being the case, our subject had almost no chance to attend school during childhood, but later he became a pupil in the Cedar Falls public schools, working for his board and thus obtained a fair knowledge of the rudiments of the English language.

Early in life Mr. Crye became a woodman and cruised through the forest, becoming familiar with every section for miles around, and his services were soon much in demand from those who came to this section in search of homes or to locate sawmills and other industrial plants. The Omaha Railroad Company engaged his services in their Land Department and for 2 years he protected the Company's lands from the ravages of trespassers. His next engagement was with Webb & Griffen, a prominent mercantile and logging firm. He went to Polk Co., then a virgin wilderness, to take charge of the Company's branch store at Joel. The position was a responsible one as it involved the purchase of ties, bolts, lumber, etc. and for 3 yrs. Mr. Crye remained there giving the utmost satisfaction to his employers. During this period he was made the first postmaster at Joel, and his commission was signed by Post Master General Wanmaker in 1890. In 1894 Mr. Crye came to Ladysmith, then Warner, a small hamlet of only a few houses. He subsequently bought property in the village for which he paid $125.00 and held it until 1903 when he sold it for $1,365.00. While a resident of Ladysmith he worked in the mills and invested his surplus earnings in real estate, buying the land on which he now lives, at $2 an acre. This land he has improved by putting up a good residence and has at present 10 acres cleaned ready for the plow. While residing in the village of Ladysmith Mr. Crye held the office of Justice of the Peace for several years and had much to do with the adjustment of its early affairs. He is a well informed man who has taken the greatest interest in local history and gave material to J.O. Bailey, a pioneer of Dunn County who prepared a very acceptable history of that County. In 1884 in Dunn Co. Mr. Crye was married to a daughter of Jonathon Bowman. Mr. Bowman, a pioneer in Richland Co., Wisconsin and later in Polk Co., was a soldier in the Civil War and is now deceased. Mr. Crye had 5 brothers who served in the same war, 3 of whom still bear honorable wounds and all of whom can point with justifiable pride to noble military records. Mr. and Mrs. Crye have had 5 children born to them: Leon, Chloe, Zoe, Claude and Oriel, a bright and intelligent family, promising to grow into fine types of American man and womanhood. Mr. Crye is esteemed in his locality. His knowledge of woodcraft gained by long years of experience, is excelled by few, if any, of his contemporaries. In the early days, when cruising, he rarely used a compass, but could keep his course with unerring certainty by careully observing the bark of the trees.
